Cerbis: Making Civil Engineering Research Relevant

CERBIS or Civil Engineering Research-Based Initiatives & Services is a community service and engagement activity of the DLSU Civil Engineering Department where undergraduate and graduate research works address civil engineering (CE) related problems within communities and local government units. Among the challenges and issues that have been addressed in recent years, CERBIS has pursued studies on traffic management, transportation planning, disaster risk assessment, seismic, wind, and flood risk assessments, supporting LGUs in the preservation of heritage buildings, and promotion of safe schools.

These research studies are conducted either by the DLSU students and faculty or are conducted in collaboration with other schools or LGUs. For example, in Iloilo City where most of these projects took place, the DLSU CE Department collaborated with local educational institutions, such as Central Philippine University and University of the Philipppines Visayas, and local government units to solve CE related issues in both Iloilo City and Guimaras Province. These research initiatives focused on (a) preserving the Heritage site/buildings of Iloilo City, (b) Traffic and transport management through sustainable transport scenario modelling in Iloilo City and (c) Analysis of tourists for job creation and economic growth.
